Yellow Ginger Plant

Also known as “cream garland lily” and Hedychium flavescens Carey ex Roscoe, this native of Eastern Himalayas and Northeast India produces intensely perfumed pale yellow flowers.  Sweet! The one in the photo is an immature flower bud, waiting to emerge. The tuber root system of this plant makes it easy to spread and propagate (with none of my own intervention), and can become a weed, if not carefully managed (apparently is a non-native weed in Hawaii). I grow mine in a semi-shaded corner in my front yard. It grows tall in my garden – about 3 feet high and taller. Not all stalks produce flowers, however, from my experience, so you’ll have to wait until they’re rather tall to find out. Totally worth the wait!
