Re-Emergence of Amaryllis Leaves!

Almost a year ago, I was gifted with two amaryllis (Hippeastrum) bulbs to enjoy for the winter holiday season. After the flowers and leaves faded and were removed, I followed instructions to leave the bulbs in soil in their containers and to not water them until their next flowering season – which is now! I was quite uneasy having to let the soil dry out. I did not know if the stress of it would kill the bulbs, but it looks like they enjoyed the rest.IMG_3149

Two weeks ago, one of the bulbs had small green leaves peeking out. I couldn’t believe it – signs of life! I happily started adding water to the soil for both of the bulbs once a week and now both have small leaves that are getting taller every day. I am so very happy to see this. Last year, one produced flowers (Minerva) while the other produced leaves only. Perhaps this year, they will both be ready to produce flowers. Fingers crossed!

  1. To get mine to flower, I had to keep them in a dark closet with no water for several months so they would go dormant. Then when it started to come up, a bud and two leaves, I put them out in the sun. Great post!
