My purple aeonium garden has been graced by the presence of five flower spikes. That is a record for my garden! In my previous post of my purple aeoniums, they looked typical, covered with rosettes.
Since then, some of the rosettes grew tall, transforming five of them into flower spikes. Compare the transformed rosettes in this photo with typical rosettes in the photo from my previous post. A lot can happen in a month!
Check out the second photo, a close-up of one of these spikes. Inside each of those tiny green buds is an eye-popping yellow flower ready to explode onto the scene. The result will look like upside down golden cones. Simply exquisite.
Over the next few weeks, I expect these flower spikes to grower taller still and I will be supporting them by tying them to sturdy stakes. Several years ago, when flower spikes first appeared, a mighty wind blew through and snapped them off; I was quite broken-hearted and hope not to repeat that experience.
So, if you see your purple aeonium rosettes suddenly get taller, flower spikes may be in your future. That’s a lovely future!
