Dragon Tree: Miraculous Growth from Cutting!

I would not have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes! Back in May of this year, my much-beloved dragon tree (aka drago tree and Dracaena draco) was trimmed, to remove branches that were growing into my garage. I save most cuttings and placed them in containers, to propagate them, and they’re thriving. But, a few that did not appear to show signs of growth, I used them to block off gopher holes. Well one of these babies has sprouted impressive new leaves, 2 leaf shoots that will eventually become branches. The cutting is lying horizontal. That is, the cut part of the cutting is not even planted in soil, only exposed to air. This cutting shows no visible roots, but an incredible 5 months later, it shows robust new growth. PHENOMENAL! I had given a friend a cutting. He is a native of the Canary Islands, where this tree calls home. He had reported the same thing – he’d kept his cutting planted in a container and it shows no roots, but it has grown new leaf shoots.

The tiny dragon tree seeds on the concrete area are from a seed stalk removed at the same time during the May tree trimming. If you look in the far right-hand corner, you’ll see a totally separate, new dragon tree seedling that appears to have sprouted by a renegade seed rolling into the soil and making itself at home. I am constantly impressed by the dragon tree’s sheer will to live and thrive. It’s truly a miracle of nature. Bravo!
