Gray Bird Grasshopper – Lounging!

This grasshopper (also known as vagrant grasshopper and Schistocerca nitens), was standing next to my patio doormat (on its left) for at least 15 minutes, nearly motionless. Lounging? Contemplating the state of its world? I took this photo at around 6:15 p.m. I had just finished watering my backyard garden. I noticed this critter during that time. Click on the photo to get a more detailed view of its features! It is usually incognito in my garden, blending in with the color of the soil, mulch, and rose canes, where it is often found.

I very much like knowing about the various creatures that visit my garden and am fortunate that many have stood still long enough to be captured on camera. Of course, shortly after this photo was taken, it went airborne. I’ll have to be faster with the camera next time to capture that image!

  1. As a child I saw so many mantids and grasshoppers…now I never see any…sad that the concrete jungle is taking over here!

  2. So very true! But I’ve noticed that the more plants that I have, either in the soil or in containers, the more grasshoppers, crickets, butterflies, and other creatures move in to my garden!
