Succulent: Crassula “Gollum”

This lovely plant, Crassula “Gollum” – a nod to Tolkein’s fictional character – is known by so many other names: Crassula argentea “Hobbit,” Crassula argentea “Coral,” Crassula portulacea, Living Coral Plant, Trumpet Jade, Finger Jade, and probably many others. A succulent by any other name…! It has an other-worldly beauty to it, with suction cup-like tips with edges lightly tinged in red. Crassula \ It is really quite unusual in its features. A native of South Africa, this plant is tough. It’s thriving in a shaded area of my yard in the 4-inch pot it originally came in, a much beloved member of my garden!

CONSUMER ALERT UPDATE:  Ingestion of the sap of the jade plant may cause illness and skin contact with the sap may also cause dermatitis. More information on toxic plants can be found here:

  1. That sure is a nice, BIG healthy looking specimen! I wonder just how tall it will eventually get???

  2. Hi, Julie. I’ve read in various places that it can grow from 1-1/2 feet at the low end to 3 feet and taller on the high end. I’ll probably repot it in a 5 gallon container to find out!
