Cymbidium Orchid

Cymbidium orchid, unknown, May 27, 2008I’m not sure exactly which cymbidium orchid this is (it was a gift), but it’s the last one standing in my collection of cymbidiums! The colors are truly breathtaking and the curves exquisite. Cymbidiums have been very easy to grow. I’ve had and enjoyed these plants for nearly 10 years now.

TIP: I grow all of my orchids in 5-gallon containers. I only give them water once a week, even during flowering season. They’re planted in potting soil. That’s it. I’ve been told to add special orchid food and to plant them in special orchid soil (whatever that is), but the truth is, I don’t care to have what I think to be a grotesquely tall spike with even more flowers, which may exhaust the plant. My cymbidiums flower nicely on their own on good-sized spikes, and most flower every year using this strategy. I also grow them in filtered shade.
